Topic A: The Status of the Peacekeeping Operation in Georgia.
Topic B: The Situation in Sudan. The Darfur Province.
The Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, in accordance to the principles of the United Nations.
We live in a world in which regional issues can quickly escalate into international problems. The interdependence, in which States base their international relations, makes a crisis in another continent a matter of their national security.
Because of this, the international community has the moral responsibility to take a stand regarding the humanitarian crisis in the Sudanese region of Darfur. States cannot remain at the margins of this problem. It’s not only taking away thousands of lives, but it’s spilling over the Sudanese borders creating a threat to the continent’s stability. Member States of the United Nations have the responsibility to act when humanitarian crisis appear.
At the same time, the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Georgia is going through a crisis regarding its structure. Recent declarations by the Parliament of Georgia demand the Russian Federation to stop their military personnel contributions to the operation, since it is, as they consider, a violation of their national sovereignty. On the other hand, the Russian Federation considers the problem in the Abkhaz province a matter of their national security. This Council will have to debate on which demand will be taken into consideration, or how to use the diplomatic channels to reach a peaceful settlement.
