ITAM is the highest-ranked institution in Mexico for economic research, according to the May 2026 rankings published by Research Papers in Economics (RePEc), the world's largest collaborative database dedicated to economics research. The ranking places ITAM ahead of the Bank of Mexico, El Colegio de México, CIDE, and the School of Government and Public Transformation at Tecnológico de Monterrey.

What the Ranking Measures

RePEc brings together publications, authors, and institutions specializing in economics and finance, producing monthly rankings based on indicators such as the number of publications, academic citations, and the h-index. Unlike general university rankings, RePEc does not evaluate institutions as a whole. Instead, it measures the scientific output of each institution's registered research community. At ITAM, that community is represented by the Department of Economics. In this edition, the platform evaluated 90 economics institutions across Mexico.

More Than Three Decades of Research Excellence

This recognition reflects the work of the Center for Economic Research (CIE), established in 1993 to strengthen scientific research in economics and to expand ITAM's collaboration with the international academic community.

The CIE is home to a full-time faculty dedicated to research. Its members also lead ITAM's Master's and Ph.D. programs in Economics, creating a strong connection between cutting-edge research and the education of future generations of economists.

Alongside the CIE, the Department also includes the Center for Economic Analysis and Research, which focuses on monitoring Mexico's economic conditions, and the Center for Applied Economics and Public Policy, dedicated to evaluating public policy programs.

Behind this achievement is the daily work of ITAM faculty, researchers, and graduate students, whose scholarly contributions to economics continue to receive international recognition through organizations such as RePEc.
